First Contact Team from Hermsdorf

written by John Oostdyk

Germany youth help build a new bridge on an old foundation.

First Contact Team from Hermsdorf

A German First Contact Team travels 700 km to help build a new bridge  between their town of Hermsdorf and the Dutch town of Krabbendijke.

Gideon, Sebastian, Nathanael and Damaris arrived in the Atlantic Bridge centre after midnight on Friday October 27. They travelled this distance in behalf of the youth group of their church, the Frei Evangelische Gemeinde in Hermsdorf.

For 36 years a bridge of friendship and faith existed between the Ev. Lutheran church of Hermsdorf and the Protestant church in Krabbendijke. It was a bridge of encouragement in difficult times.  Last year, 2016, the participating churches felt their members are getting too old to continue to make this journey and some of the initial purpose for this bridge faded away after the wall between East and West Germany came down in 1989.

But why not use this old foundation for building a new bridge between young people in both places. Maybe a different type of bridge. So the youth of the Frei Evangelische Gemeinde took up this challenge and sent a First Contact Team to Krabbendijke to investigate this possibility and to see if young people in the Krabbendijke region would be interested.
